Oculus Rift demo at Pervasive Media Studio

Following the Pervasive Media Studio's Friday lunchtime talk on May 10th there will be a demo of the upcoming Oculus Rift VR hardware by Bristol games developer WormSlayer.
Having thrashed their Kickstarter funding target, the team behind the Oculus Rift is working hard to prepare the VR game system for market. The demo at the Pervasive Media Studio will allow developers in the region to get a taste for the possibilities of the new technology.

IdeasTap's 10 x 10 x Mother film brief

Want to develop your film-making portfolio? Then take a look at the film brief of the 10 x 10 x Mother programme, spearheaded by IdeasTap and creative company Mother.
10 x 10 x Mother is a programme of 10 multidisciplinary briefs developed by Mother, designed to help you to think conceptually and develop your portfolio. One of those briefs asks film-makers to create a film of no longer than 60 seconds, with the theme of RISK. The film should contain a narrative with dialogue, and have a beginning, a middle and an end.
The prize winner for this brief will receive £500, and will join the two runners up in receiving personalised feedback on their work from leading industry masterminds. The overall winner of the 10 x 10 x Mother programme will additionally receive a coveted six-week paid internship at Mother London's offices.
The deadline for submission is July 1st, so get working on your one-minute film masterpiece!

Music Video Award brought to Encounters Film Festival

A new category specifically showcasing music videos has been added to the Encounters Film Festival, being held in Bristol this September.
The Music Video Award sees Encounters partner with the team behind the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival, who will curate the new category. Also, those music videos chosen for Encounters will also be screened at the London Short Film Festival, to be held in early 2014.
In additional to the screenings, the winners of the Music Video Award will receive £500. The submission deadline for Encounters is June 3rd, so there's still time to finish your killer video for the festival!

Experience in Adobe Fireworks, Photoshop and Illustrator is essential, with HTML, CSS and responsive web design knowledge being an asset. The position would suit a recent graduate or a self-taught designer with at least 2-years experience.

Ken Eklund lunchtime talk

Game designer Ken Eklund will be giving a talk on the topic of Alternative Reality Gaming and "authentic fiction" at the Pervasive Media Studio in Bristol, on April 30th.
Eklund has long been interested in the positive social effects of collaborative experiences and open-ended, creative play. In work such as World Without Oil, Giskin Anomoly and Ed Zed Omega he explores how contributing to "authentic fictions" (real-seeming yet fictional stories) engage people directly in real-world issues and have fun collaborating on storymaking, positive solutions and action.
This lunchtime talk is free and available to all. Booking is not required but it is recommended that you arrive a little early to avoid disappointment as seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The visual effects gurus behind Skyfall will be giving a masterclass at Bath Digital Festival, on Sunday March 24th.
The internationally acclaimed X Media Lab is launching a brand new 'Creative Masterclass Series' during the Festival, and will be hosting speakers who drive some of the world’s very best known multimedia brands.

Bristol Encounters 0117 Hour Digital Short Challenge, 13-18 April

The Bristol Encounters 0117 Hour Digital Short Challenge returns for its third edition, taking place between the 13-18 April, with a grand prize of £1000.
Participants from around the country are challenged to create digital shorts of up to 3 minutes in the space of just 117 hours. The works should be focused on the theme of 'Journeys' and exploring Bristol Temple Quarter; work created should also draw on Bristol (people, places or life) as inspiration.
