Preloader Final, the judges report
Back to Projects | Posted on 25 Mar 2011

TV producer David Collier led the judges panel for the Preloader final. The report has now been submitted and comments are as follows:
THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE
A very witty and well-made production. The film makers supported by Suited and Booted Studios set
up a clear situation that is explored in great and imaginative comic detail.
Excellent technical work helps to make it a genuinely crowd-pleasing piece of
work.
FUTURE DESIRES
This film is distinguished by excellent direction from a young film maker who
demonstrates real talent in using a camera and selection of shots. The
technical skill shows that Darren Potter has the talent and potential to
develop into a top class director.
RINSE IT OUT
Daring and beautiful, both visually and narratively, this music video is
emotionally involving with genuinely surprising imagery. The music works
excellently with the pictures and the whole production shows real technical
skill and virtuosity.
CREATIVE SWITCH
Very nicely written and produced film from Crowdys Hill. Good music and
excellently shot, with particularly strong framing on the action. Witty and
provocative at making its serious point about the dangers of smoking.
A VILLAGE APART
A really well made film with interesting directorial choices. Technically
strong in all areas and particularly good editing; necessary when telling the
inter-connected stories. Sensitively made with a clear concern for the
inequalities you can find in some communities.
LIFE AND DEATH
Commonweal's film packs a lot of action into it's short duration. Good
performances and strong visuals reveal the serious health message. A
moving and imaginative piece of work with great production and technical
values.
ONE SPECIAL DAY
Acting of the finest calibre, coupled with a strong and developed story, gives
this film the edge on other productions and why it was given the judges' Best
Film Award. Great direction, with beautiful and poetic images: all areas of
Darren Barber and Steve Andrews' film were exceptional.
KATIE'S DAD
An involving and sincere exploration of love and grief. The screenplay takes on
major emotional themes and explores them with sensitivity and insight. The
magical realism qualities lifts the film out of the ordinary in a clever and
accessible way. A film of great charm.
COME DIE WITH ME
Very well acted and very funny, this film is a sparky parody that manages,
successfully, to inform as well as entertain the audience. Good directing and
production values demonstrate to great effect the students of Greendown
School's technical skills as well as their combined creative talents.
WASTELANDERS
The film starts with a superlative montage showing wonderful editing
ability. The selection and use of images is outstanding, as is the choice
of witty, counterpointed music. The contrast between the snazzy opening
and the claustrophobic drama set in the bar is clever and effective. After
the quick-cutting sequence, the scenes between the characters were witty and
insightful, with a great use of contained locations.
